Review of Wildness: Relations of People & Place

Edited by Gavin Van Horn and John Hausdoerffer. Chicago and London: University of Chicago Press, 2017.

Wildness brings together 24 esteemed authors from a variety of landscapes, geographies, cultures, and backgrounds to share their stories about the interdependence of everyday human life and wildness. This book reveals the many ways in which human communities can nurture, adapt to, and thrive alongside their wild nonhuman kin. The authors provide insights into what wildness is and could be. We might unearth a more profound, wilder understanding of what it means to be human.

Robert C. Harriss is an environmental researcher and writer in Boulder, Colorado. Most recently he was a senior scientist on the Natural Gas Project at the Environmental Defense Fund.
