Knowledge, Policy, and Expertise: The UK Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution 1970–2011
Susan Owens. Oxford, UK: Oxford University Press, 2015 (ISBN 978-0-19-829465-8).
This is a magisterial account of a unique deliberative college. Susan Owens, who served with distinction on the UK Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution for a decade, has combined theories of political and policy assessment with perspectives on science and participation and fresh considerations on environmentalism over its formative 40-year existence, to create a lucid and compelling analysis of a unique British institution. She took more than a decade to complete this work, as she was acutely aware of the importance of her task in light of the demise of the UK Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution (the Commission) in 2011. Here was a glorious opportunity to take stock of a remarkable collection of minds and matters, and to expose ways of assessing influence and innovation in managing environmental themes in the modern age.
Before retiring in July 2005, Tim O'Riordan was a professor of environmental sciences at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England.
