Why Laudato si' Matters

Pope Francis is not a natural scientist, though he studied chemistry. He is not a philosopher, though he is steeped in the history of Western thought. Nor is he a political scientist or an ordinary politician, though he is the Sovereign of the State of the Vatican City and presides over the Holy See's large and sophisticated diplomatic corps. What is true is this: Laudato si' is the first really important environmental text of the twenty-first century.

Dale Jamieson teaches environmental studies, philosophy, and law at New York University, where he also chairs the Environmental Studies Department.
