A New Ocean

Each summer, the guessing game begins. How far will Arctic sea ice retreat this year? We have become accustomed to these stories, perhaps even inured to one of the defining environmental changes of our time. The predictions and the commentary about ice, however, tend to miss a key part of the story: how much more open water there is, and what this means for people and the Arctic environment.

Henry P. Huntington is a senior officer for The Pew Charitable Trusts, where he directs the science work of its Arctic programs.
