Books of Note: Future Lab Germany: Innovations for Tomorrow's World

Günther Bachmann and Lutz Engelke, Eds., Hamburg, Germany: Murmann, 2013; 288 pp. (ISBN 978-3-86774-291-1).

The editors of this visionary volume are tireless exponents of practical sustainability. They have collected 27 essays from a wide range of commentators to commemorate the 75th birthday of Klaus Topfer, a distinguished former German Environment Minister and previous Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme. What they have created is an optimistic but workable statement of how Germany is becoming a laboratory for sustainable technology and living that should be emulated throughout the European Union and across the world economy.

TIM O'RIORDAN, before retiring in July 2005, was a professor of environmental sciences at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England. He was elected Fellow of the British Academy in 1999 and was an active member of the UK Sustainable Development Commission for 8 years to 2008.
